  • Henne, Hoffman & Stephens Families – Mansfield Tire & Rubber Company

The Mansfield Tire and Rubber Company was founded in the city in 1909, producing tires for automobiles. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Mansfield tire brand stood shoulder to shoulder with Goodyear, Goodrich, Firestone and Uniroyal, the "Big Four" tire name brands in the industry at the time.  The TIRE received the Army/Navy E Award during WWII and closed in 1979.  VIDEO

  • Hautzenroeder Family – Hautzenroeder Cigar Company

The Hautzenroeder Company was established in 1870 by Leonard and his Son, Charles.  They were the largest of the 17 Cigar Factories in Mansfield and among the first to make a better quality of cigar.  From tobacco that was brought in by Rail and which was shipped to distant points.  They closed sometime in the early 1940s.   • Col David Cockley, Lozier,  Yost, Dick, Williams, Dempsey, Seltzer – Shelby Tube Company, now Arcelor-Mittal

The Shelby Seamless Tube Company began in 1890, by Col Cockley and Messer: Lozier, Yost, Dick, Williams, Dempsey and Seltzer; providing Tubing to the booming Bicycle Industry. Today the Factory produces many different kinds of Steel Tubing and is owned by Arcelor-Mittal. VIDEO

  • John Conard – Richland Shale Brick Company

The Richland Shale Brick Company began 1880s, when a Shale Deposit was located North of Mansfield.   John A Conard bought the Plant in 1920; and his son, John B took over Management in 1926.  Richland Shale produced over 60M Bricks per year.  John sold the Business around 1979 and died in 1982.   • JC Gorman & HE Rupp – The Gorman-Rupp Company

The Gorman-Rupp Company was founded in 1933 by JC Gorman and HE Rupp; both unemployed during the Great Depression.  JC was working with his Father-in-law at Barnes; and HE had come to Mansfield in 1919, when the Aultman-Taylor Company had lured in away from International Harvester.  The Company began making Diaphragm Pumps designed by HE and sold by JC.  The Company exists today under JCs Grandson, Jeff, Chairman & Scott King, CEO; with Sales in 2023 of $659M. Bob Enskat – General Motors/Fisher Body Div/CPC

After serving in WWII, Bob Enskat received an Electrical Engineering Degree from Washington University in St Louis; and began his career with General Motors at the Tank Plant in Grand Blanc, MI and came to Mansfield in 1976.  Bob spent 13 years running the Ontario CPC Plant and was involved in many Civic Causes; passing away in 2009.   • WJ Tappan & Burton Preston – Globe Steel Abrasive Company

The Globe Steel Abrasive Company was the brain-child of WJ Tappan(Founder of the Eclipse/Tappan Stove Company) and Burton Preston(Owner of Preston & Company, a Granite Importer).  Both men had a need for a good Steel Abrasive in their own Businesses. At one time Globe was the largest producer of Steel Abrasives, in the World.   The Company was founded in 1907, sold to Park Industries in 1970 and closed in 1991. VIDEO

  • John Morley, Charles Swain, Ralph Constance & Tom Barber  --  Midwest Houses INC

The Midwest Houses INC business began with the Partnership of three experienced individuals in the Building Construction Industry, in 1946.  John Morley had worked for his Brother-in-law, who owned Great Lakes Steel – Stran Steel Division, who had gotten a Contract during WWII, to build 5,000 Quonset Huts.  And, not having the room, they made a deal to use the Martin Steel Plant.  Charles Swain began in 1942, and was the Mortgage Financier.  Ralph Constance’s Family owned a Lumber Yard in Mansfield and he began there in 1926.  And, Tom Barber began his construction career in 1935.  Midwest built thousands of Pre-Fabbed Homes in Lexington, Mt Gilead and Mt Vernon over the years.  VIDEO
